Penelope, by Norman Thelwell

Norman Thelwell was born in Birkenhead, England, which is a small industrial town across the River Mersey from Liverpool, which may explain Thelwell's preference for the English countryside. He was the creator of 'Chicko' before he found his true comic niche with girls and ponies that evade fences, as with the pig-tailed girl called Penelope and her pony Kipper. 'Chicko' was published in the British magazine Eagle, and his other work was published for many years by Punch and the Sunday Express in England. Thelwell produced some 32 books, and did a lot of cartooning as well as landscapes, painting in water-colour and oils. His first book, a collection of his cartoons, Angels on Horseback, was published in 1957. Since his debut in Punch in the 1950s, Norman Thelwell's cartoons and drawings have delighted millions of people.

Norman Thelwell died after a long illness on 8 February 2004.
