'Too Much Coffee Man'.
Shannon Wheeler started cartooning in the late 1980s while studying architecture at UC Berkeley. His early cartoon work included the daily gag cartoons 'Calaboose' and 'Tooth and Justice' in The Daily Californian. He drew for The Daily Texan after moving to Austin, Texas in 1990. He has written and published stories with his anti-hero 'Too Much Coffee Man' since 1991, that appeared in self-published zines, comic books, magazines, and websites. Several comic book collections were published by Dark Horse Comics since 1998, as well as 'Too Much Coffee Man's Guide for the Perplexed' and other book collections.
'Too Much Coffee Man', often referred to as TMCM, is a cynical hero. The character derives his powers from a potent brew of espresso, but TMCM is more often hampered than helped by his caffeine addiction. The comic book managed to mix the current obsession with coffee with scathing satire and sizzling silliness that often went far beyond most comics, and it won Shannon Wheeler the prestigious Eisner Award.
Wheeler has additionally done illustrations for books like 'Jobs that Don't Suck' by Charlie Drozdyk and 'Do I Come Here Often' by Henry Rollins. From 2004 until 2008, Wheeler contributed to many of the 'Idiot's Guide' books, and he had a weekly strip called 'Postage Stamp Funnies' in The Onion until 2009. He has been a regular cartoonist for The New Yorker since 2009. He lives and works in Portland, Oregon.
