'Sanmao Liulangji Xuanji'.
Born in Haiyan County, Zhejiang Province, Zhang Leping was one of the pioneering manhua (Chinese comic) artists. He started to contribute his works to Modern Cartoon and other periodicals in Shanghai during the 1930s. He took part in anti-Japanese cartoon propaganda activities. It was in these works that he first used the character 'Sanmao' in 1935.

Zhang Leping built his fame after 1946 by using 'Sanmao' in such long cartoon serials als 'Sanmao Joins the Army', 'The Adventures of Sanmao', 'Sanmao Welcomes Liberation' and 'Diary of Father and Son'. In the 1950s he worked for the Shanghai People's Fine Arts Publishing House, the Shanghai-based Liberation Daily and the Shanghai Youth and Children's Publishing House. In addition to 'Sanmao', Zhang Leping's other creations include 'Mr. Wang' and 'Miss Bee'.
