Aloys Oosterwijk - Sexually Correct (September 2001)

21 September 2001

On Friday, 21 September 2001, Galerie Lambiek opened the exhibition of the collected oeuvre of Aloys Oosterwijk, best known as the artist of the weekly comic 'Willems Wereld' ('Willem's World') in magazine Panorama.

The sympathetic would-be womanizer Willem suffers a great deal from his "sexually correct" attitude in a world full of feminine beauty. He shares his sorrows with several typically Amsterdam characters, usually over a beer in the local pub. 'Willems Wereld' was preceded by the comic 'Cor Morelli', about a detective, which appeared in magazines Robbedoes and Sjosji in the early 1990s. Oosterwijk also made erotic comics for Spanish periodicals.

Beside originals of Oosterwijk's comic work, this exhibition featured lesser known watercolors and drawings by his hand. In the last week of the exhibition, on Saturday 17 November, the newest album of 'Willems Wereld', 'Sexueel Correct' was presented at Galerie Lambiek. You can see some of the artwork online in our Aloys Oosterwijk virtual exhibition.
