50 years of Lambiek!

8 November 2018

On 8 November 2018 it is exactly 50 years ago that Kees Kousemaker opened the first European comics store in Amsterdam: Lambiek. To celebrate this milestone, we have initiated two wonderful projects, in which we look back on 50 years of comics history.

The Story of Lambiek

During the past few months, most of the Lambiek archives has been digitalized and organized. The Comiclopedia team Kjell Knudde and Bas Schuddeboom has added a new section to the website, in which our glorious history shall be disclosed. The Story of Lambiek is serialized in weekly episodes until our birthday on 8 November.

Much of the unique artwork from our archives can soon be admired in a special book with the fitting title 50 Years Lambiek (in Dutch, separate English translation available). It shall be presented on 10 November during our jubileum celebration in De Waag on the Nieuwmarkt.

The book contains original drawings by international greats such as Will Eisner, André Franquin and Robert Crumb, which shall be alternated with guest book signings and announcements for the many expositions and signings held between the wall of the antiquariat. Of course, a lot of attention will be spent to the promotional artwork by our house cartoonist Peter Pontiac, as well as the humorous cameos of the store in different comics series such as Agent 327, Heinz, Donald Duck and Urbanus. Furthermore the book will feature new graphic homages by artists from several artistic disciplines, from cartoonist Gerard Leever to painter Peter Klashorst.

The publication, compiled by Boris Kousemaker and Bas Schuddeboom, has received a beautiful lay-out by Cyril Koopmeiners, who has earned his spurs with the compilation volumes of Windig & De Jong's 'Heinz' strip. An insert with an English translation by Kjell Knudde will be available for our foreign customers.

The book available for pre-order in our webshop.
