James Allen was born in 1967 into an American-German family in Nue Holm, Germany. His father passed away when James was 5 years old and his mother moved them back to Georgia, United States. From 2007 on, he was Jack Elrod's assistant on the wildlife newspaper comic 'Mark Trail'. After years of training, he was hired by King Features as the official artist of the strip after Elrod's retirement in March 2014. Between 11 April 2014 and 12 October 2020, Allen continued 'Mark Trail', until he, in turn, was succeeded by Jules Rivera.
