Jan van Amerongen is the artist of several politically themed comic strips of the 1970s. Born Jan Hendrikus van Amerongen in Haarlem, he spent his childhood in several towns in the Randstad area. He became a freelance graphic artist after leaving the Higher Civic School, and lived in Indonesia from 1949 until 1956. He eventually settled in Amsterdam, where he mainly worked as an advertising artist and painter.
Van Amerongen drew the hippie comic 'Kabouterstrip' (or 'Kabouters van Oranje Vrijstaat', 1970-1971) for the Kabouterkrant, the publication of the Dutch anarchist group Kabouters that was formed by former Provos Roel van Duyn and Robert Jasper Grootveld. Van Amerongen also made a political comic for BBKkrant (1975) and cartoons for Suck and BBDkrant (mid-1970s).
He should not be confused with U.S. comic artist Jerry Van Amerongen.
