Frederic Bates was a recognized Australian painter of mainly landscapes. Born in New South Wales in 1918, Bates studied in Sydney and Newcastle, and was a member of the Royal Art Society of New South Wales. Back in 1948, he illustrated the title feature of the 'Speck Ryan' comic book, of which six issues were published by Wollumbin Press. He also did illustrations for some children's books.
