Ranilla by Juan Bautista Urrutia
'Aventuras Maravillosas de Ranilla'.

Juan Bautista Urrutia was a lithographer and a pioneer in Mexican comics. He worked for Litografía Montauriol, Litografía Española and Litografía Catalana, but is best known for his work for El Buen Tono. By 1903 he was hired by this cigar and cigarette factory to design their creative advertising campaigns and packages, which he did for a long time. This also included a variety of cartoons and strips supporting the brand, published in newspapers, including 'Aventuras Maravillosas de Ranilla'. Ranilla was published in book format in 1922 and can be considered one of the first regular Mexican comic characters.
