Glen Baxter was born in Leeds in 1944 into a working class family. He is known for his idiosyncratic, surreal sense of humor that fuses the absurd with a dry wit. He attended the Leeds College of Art School, and subsequently settled in London, where he made his living as a teacher, while writing and drawing in his spare time. He published his first poems and drawings in 'Adventures in Poetry', a stenciled magazine by American poet Larry Fagin, and had several exhibitions in New York.

In 1977, Baxter chose to focus his attentions on The Netherlands. De Harmonie in Amsterdam published a collection of his drawings entitled 'Atlas', two years later. England, Finland, France and Australia followed in quick succession and in 1998 a major exhibition of his works was held at Modernism gallery in San Francisco. His work has been published in several British papers, but also The New Yorker and Variety in the USA, and Vrij Nederland in The Netherlands.

Known as "the Colonel" to his baying legions of admirers, Glen Baxter is the author of more than twenty cartoon books including 'The Wonder Book of Sex', 'Glen Baxter's Gourmet Guide' and 'Blizzards of Tweed'. He chronicled his view on The Netherlands (and its artists like Rietveld and Mondriaan) in 'Colonel Baxter's Dutch Safari', presented in Gallery Lambiek by Wim de Bie on 23 March 2012.
Glen Baxter was a stong influence on Benoît, Steve Michiels and Brecht Vandenbroucke.
