Gary Blehm was born in Washington state. When he was twelve years old, he drew a character later to be known as 'Penman', a stick figure man made of blotch of ink. When he married Jan, he drew his first 'Find Two Identical Penmen' poster in her dining room table. It featured 1,039 Penmen drawings, of which only two are the same. He developed the idea, and attempted to get syndicated. Creators Syndicate started syndicating 'Find Two Identical Penmen' every Sunday, starting in 1996. There are different titles on each strip, like 'Find Two Identical Anvil Head Penmen' or 'Find Two Identical In-Line Penmen'. The strip ended on September 9th, 2001. The final 'Penmen' strip was 'Find Two Identical Wall Street Penmen'. 'Penmen' is continued online.
