Krabbels en klodders by Frans Brouwer
'Krabbels en Klodders'.

Frans Brouwer was a Dutch amateur artist from Voorburg, who has historical relevance because of the comic strips he made in World War II, under the title 'Krabbels en Klodders'. Between 18 April 1944 and 10 May 1945, Brouwer filled his sketchbook with 33 illustrated two-page letters from and to fictional persons. With a keen sense of irony and satire, his comics gave an interesting account of life in The Netherlands during the Nazi occupation, dealing with subjects like the NSB, the Hungerwinter, D-Day and the Arbeitseinsatz. The importance of Brouwer's comic letters was acknowledged by historian dr. Lou de Jong, who preserved them in the archives of the Dutch Institute for War Documentation, NIOD. Brouwer, who had been a technical draftsman at Siemens, didn't manage to get his 'Krabbels en Klodders' published after the war. It wasn't until 2010 that the publisher Matrijs released his work in book format.
