Capitan Barba by Alfredo Calvo
Capitán Barba de los carros patrullero (Rebelde 6 #5-6, November 1959)

Alfredo Calvo Montalvo is a Cuban comic artist and one of the founders of Ediciones en Colores. Born in Havana, Calvo has drawn extensively for advertisements and also created a great many comics. From the 1950s throughout the 1980s, his work has appeared in magazines like Fantasía ('Latino'), Maracas, Bohemia ('El despertar del profesor Bern') and the socialist children's magazine Mella ('Juan Montes'). He made a special supplement about the Cuban revolution for Maracas magazine in 1959. He was also present in Rebelde 6, the publication of the National Revolutionary Police Force, with the comic 'Capitán Barba' in 1959.

Calvo headed Ediciones en Colores with Fidel Morales Vega between 1965 and 1968. The publishing house printed the humor weekly Palante and the monthlies ¡Aventuras!, Muñequitos, Din Don and Fantásticos. As authors, Calvo and Morales cooperated on stories like 'Recuerdo de Chamaco' that was published in ¡Aventuras!.
