Walther Caspari was born in 1869 in Chemnitz as the son of a cloth dealer. Although destined to become a salesman himself, Caspari chose an artistic profession. He attended the Art Schools in Leipzig and Weimar, and completed his education at the Munich Art Academy. During his lifetime, he made many travels, through Europe and North Africa, inspiring him to his fine art. Caspari has illustrated many children's books, often in cooperation with his sister Gertrud Caspari. He was a regular contributor to the satirical magazines Simplicissimus, Fliegende Blätter and Der Jugend.
