Charles Clérice was born in Buenos Aires into a family of Normandy origins. The family moved to France after the death of father Clérice in 1881. Charles found employment as an illustrator and lithographer. The signature of Clérice appeared regularly in the early issues of La Semaine de Suzette in the 1910s, with comics featuring Arabs and Persians in the fairytale atmosphere of '1001 Nights'.
Charles was sometimes helped by his brother Justin in the production of posters. These posters are mostly signed "Clérice Frères". The Clérice Frères also published two books of 'L'Affaire du Courrier de Lyon' at the SPE in 1938 (text by Aleyrac).
