Darby Conley was born in Concord, Massachusetts and grew up in Knoxville, Tennessee. He studied Fine Arts at Amherst College, where his first comics were published in the students' newspaper. An avid rugby player, he was an elementary school gym teacher for a while. He also was art director for a museum, lifeguard and bike repair man, but he still likes drawing comics best. As a great animal lover, he draws the strip 'Get Fuzzy', about a Siamese cat called Bucky and a gentle pooch called Satchel.
It debuted on 6 September 1999 in 75 newspapers, and is now distributed by United Feature Syndicate to about 650 papers worldwide. The strip, that has led to controversies at certain occasions, won the National Cartoonists Society's Award for Best Comic Strip in 2002. Several books have been released by Andrews McMeel.
