Cor Hoekstra was a Frisian cartoonist, who published his work internationally under the pen name Cork. Born in 1931 in the Frisian village Franeker, Hoekstra was originally trained to become a teacher. He published his first cartoons in the staff magazine of the Leeuwarden Air Base during his military service. He subsequently worked as a teacher in Oranjewoud until 1961, and then turned to fulltime cartooning. He published his early work in local papers like De Friese Koerier, but after a while his work was printed in papers and magazines from Germany, the USA, Eastern Europe, Japan and Arabic countries, including Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung, the New York Times and the Chicago Tribune. In The Netherlands, Cork's work appeared in such periodicals as Haagse Post, Revue, Panorama, Legerkoerier, Tussen De Rails, Goed Wonen and Volksonderwijs.

Among his regular themes were social abuses like air pollution, mismanagement, sports agression and TV addiction. In 1971, he was awarded the Award for Magazine Art. During the 1980s, he published satirical comics on the back page of the Frisian magazine De Strikel. His comic strip 'Meneer Cork', also known as 'Ruitenheer', ran in the papers of the Persunie group in the 1980s.
