Jose Ângelo Cottinelli Telmo was one of the founders of the publication ABC-Zinho, a very successful magazine for children in Portugal which contained games, stories and, of course, comics. Cottinelli Telmo's series 'Pirilau' was also published in this magazine from 1920. In 'Pirilau' there were some guest appearances of 'Quim e Manecas', two characters of his colleague Stuart Carvalhais. His comics work was inspired by cinema and theater. Besides his comics career, Telmo was a film director, and one of the most important Portuguese architects in the first half of the twentieth century.
