Rie Cramer was born in 1887 in Sukabumi on Java. She moved to The Netherlands at the age of 9. She attended the Art Academy in The Hague and began her career with the illustrated book 'Van Meisjes en Jongetjes' in 1906. She designed stage sets, costumes and ceramics. She wrote plays under the pseudonym Marc Holman, and for adults, she wrote poetry, radio plays and novels. She illustrated among others fairytales by Andersen, Grimm and from 1001 Night. Together with contemporaries like Anton Pieck and Ella Riemersma, she contributed to the children's magazine Zonneschijn from 1924. Another comic magazine she worked for was Doe Mee!. She died in 1977.
Rie Cramer was a strong influence on Thé Tjong-Khing.
