Cecil Langley Doughty was born in 1913 in Withernsea, Yorkshire, England, and studied at the Battersea Polytechnic. He started his career in comics drawing for P.M. Productions' Starflash and Challenger Comics and, a little later, adaptations of 'Oliver Twist' and 'Lorna Doone' for Amex's A Classic in Pictures. He became famous for his work on 'Dick Turpin' for Thriller Comics, introducing Turpin's band of comrades like Jem Peters and Beetles. He also made other outstanding historical adventures, and a few stories for magazines Knockout and School Friend. He took over the comic 'Jack O'Lantern' from Robert Ayton in magazine Eagle.
