Brown, Jones and Robinson, by Richard Doyle
'Brown, Jones and Robinson'.

Richard Doyle was a British watercolorist and illustrator. From the age of nineteen, he was a regular contributor to magazine Punch, designing the original cover and remaining on the staff until 1850. On the last two pages of the magazine, he started a sequential story, called 'Brown, Jones and Robinson' (1853). The comic was in fact a travelogue from a trip through Germany and Switzerland. Unfortunately, the anti-Catholic stance forced the Catholic Doyle to leave the magazine. He continued the narrative though, and in 1854 published it in a large book. Although the book was more illustrative then pure comic, it could be regarded as the first English graphic novel.
