Arie Emens was an illustrator who worked mainly in advertising. It was in this occupation that he often used the comics format. He worked with writer Siewert Zandt on a newspaper strip called 'Betje Kuis' for Nieuwsblad van het Noorden in 1928-29, and on comic strips for Veilig Verkeer Nederland in the 1950's ('O, o, twee dikke domme heren' in Jeugdverkeerstkrant). He made advertising comics for the Groningen electricity company in the 1930s up until the second world war. He was born in Amsterdam, but lived and worked in Groningen.
