Erika Engel spent most of her life in the DDR (German Democratic Republic), the communist part of Germany. She contributed to the magazine Wochenpost in 1953, where she created the adventurous comic series 'Jochens und Bambos merkwürdige Geschichte', about the dream journeys of a boy and his panda. She also made 'Die vier Freunde' in 1956.
