Al Frank was born to working class parents in the Chicago South-side neighborhood of the Jeffrey Manor. He left home at the age of 17 to attend Texas Tech University on a fine-arts scholarship. He had a short career in alternative comics with 'The Adventures of Tad Martin' for Caliber Press (1992-94) and one issue of 'Frank Phantom' for Mike Hunt Publications (1996). He collected his 1996-2006 work in the book 'The Negronomicon (Comics Drawn While I Should Have Been Working)'.
