Alejandro Fried was an Uruguayan-Argentine comic artist, illustrator and animator. He drew various comics in different styles, ranging from realistic to comical, and adult to children's stories. Many of his stories were made for the Argentine, Italian and German printing media.
Alejandro Fried was born in 1965 in Montevideo, Uruguay, but lived in the Argentine capital Buenos Aires since 1978. He became a freelance illustrator in 1980 for Varias. His professional comic career took off in the weekly Para Todos (1980), while also writing and drawing for the magazine Caras y Caretas. In 1981, he published his first comic story in its pages. Briefly active as a freelance advertising artist, in 1982 Fried joined the Estudio Catù, where he collaborated on various animated and advertising shorts (among others for Volkswagen,Ford, Nestlé, Moulinex, Kellogs and the Uruguayan Ministery of Tourism). In the 1980s, he also worked for animation studios like Hanna-Barbera and Ruby Spears.
In 1984, Fried embarked on a full-blown comic career and joined Alberto Breccia's studio. His comics ran in the magazines Amor, Oh! De Brigitte, Satiricón, Eroticón, Lancio Story, Skorpio, Tit Bits. Between 1984 and 1985, his work also appeared in magazines of Editorial Atlántida, like Billiken and Para Ti. As part of a team consisting of scriptwriter Guillermo Saccomanno and artist Carlos Trillo, Fried made numerous comics for the Italian market. He was also present in the German comic magazine Gespenser and the children's magazine Genios. From 1987 on, his illustrations ran in magazines published by Ediciones de la Urraca (Humor, Sex-Humor and Fierro).
Between 18 July and October 1991, Saccomanno and Fried made the police comic 'Stone, the Rock Detective', serialized in Puertitas. The comic revolves around Stone, a private detective who mostly takes cases set in the rock music industry. Originally, nine episodes were made, but only four saw print. It took until 1996 before the Italian magazine Skorpio (Aurea Editoriale) published the entire series. In 2021, it was reprinted as 'Stone, Rock Stories' (Deux Graphic Editorial, 2001). In 1994, he created 'Constancio C. Vigil' (Editorial Atlántida).
From 1996 on, Fried worked for the magazine Genios (published by Clarín). He established his own studio Fried/Machline, designing various particular urbanisation projects. Fried's art also appeared in books published by Guadal and in the children's newspaper supplement Kids News. He drew various comics for the Argentine version of Cartoon Network magazine, working on adaptations of U.S. animated series like 'Scooby-Doo', 'The Jetsons', 'Jonny Quest' and '2 Stupid Dogs'.
Fried was also active as a teacher and illustrator of educational children's books at Beeme and SocialVoice. Since October 2009, he hosted his own blog.
