'Jan Flibuste' (Grand Coeur #33, 1946).

L. Gillet was an mid-20th century artist, who worked for the short-lived Belgian comic weekly Grand Coeur, drawing the historical pirate serial 'Jan Flibuste' (1946).

Grand Coeur
Nothing is known about the identity of the cartoonist behind the signature L. Gillet. From issues #21 through #53 of 1946, his swashbuckler serial 'Jan Flibuste' appeared on the back page of Grand Coeur. Scripted by a writer credited as "Vieux Loup", the comic stars a Belgian naval hero who gets caught up in the sea battles of the Spaniards, French and English.

L. Gillet was one of the many obscure creators in Grand Coeur, who was never heard of again. Between 1945 and 1947, Grand Coeur was a short-lived comic magazine created by the cartoonist Charles Gilbert and Étienne Lamarche, publisher of the newspaper La Gazette de Liège. A large part of the material in Grand Coeur was provided by magazine editor Charles Gilbert and students from his graphic arts atelier in Liège. These can be recognized by the signatures that are associated with this studio, such as Chargil, Imagil, At-Gil, CAAG and Mac K.B. Since no further wherabouts of the artist Gillet are known, it is well possible that he was also a student or member of Charles Gilbert's Atelier des Arts Graphiques. However, his artwork was far more realistic and solid than most of the other comics in Grand Coeur, leading to believe that Gillet was more graphically skilled and experienced.
