Dan Gordon was mainly active as an animator, but he has also done comic book art in the 1940s. He worked on many features for ACG titles, including 'Angelpuss', 'Blunderbunny', 'Bungle of the Jungle', 'Jitterbuck', 'Hep', 'Snooper', 'Superkatt' and 'Cookie' up until 1953. He was also present in Rural Home publications (1945) and titles like Real Life Comics and Goofy Comics for Better Publications. He continued to do cartoon and funny animal work for Western Publishing in the 1960s.

Gordon's animation work includes jobs at Fleischer, MGM, Terrytoons and Van Beuren in the 1930s and early 1940s. In the 1950s and 1960s, he worked for Hanna-Barbera, where he did the storyboards on the first 'Flintstones' episodes, among others.
Gordon was known for having an alcoholism problem. Veteran animator Iwao Takamoto recalled that in 1940, when they worked for Fleischer's, he and Stan Green used to carpool Gordon to and from the studio, since he was often too drunk to be trusted behind the wheel. One time, Gordon hadn't properly closed the car door and when Green took a sharp turn, the door flung open and Gordon tumbled on the road. Yet he was so drunk that he felt nothing.
Gordon also endured other personal tragedies in his life. In the early 1960s, his son Kevin was hired by Hanna-Barbera, but some time later he fell asleep at home with a lit cigarette and died from smoke inhalation. Some time later, Gordon's other son also died in a car accident.
Dan Gordon was an influence on John Kricfalusi.
