Gianfranco Goria was born in 1954 in Bruneck, South Tirol, Italy. He lives and works in Turin, Italy. He has been working in the comics field as an artist (he created 'the BABs' and many other characters), as a scriptwriter (his stories were drawn by Giampiero Ubezio, Massimo De Vita, Claudio Sciarrone, Fabrizio Petrossi, Pierpaolo Rovero, Vittorio Pavesio etc.), sometimes also for the Walt Disney Company, as a script consultant (for the first episode of the 'Maser' saga by Massimiliano Frezzato), as a cartoonist, as a comics teacher and as a lecturer.

He was one of the founders of the Italian Cartoonists Society and National Centre for Comic Art Anonima Fumetti (1982) and of the new Anomina Fumetti in 1994, founded to promote comics and its creators. He co-founded also the Franco Fossati Foundation and its Comic Art Museum, and the SILF/SLC/CGIL (the Italian national Union for comic artists). He is the director of the Italian national centre for comic art CNF and Director of the daily news service afNews. Gianfranco Goria won the ANAFI Award in 2002.
