Lord of the Rings, by Greg and Tim Hildebrandt
'Lord of the Rings'.

The twin brothers Greg and Tim Hildebrandt are two illustrators, known for their collective science fiction and fantasy art. They are best known for their illustration work on J.R.R. Tolkien's 'The Lord of the Rings'. They gained a reputation for being able to imitate any style. Educated at the Meinzinger School of Art in Detroit, Greg and Tim drew children's books and record album covers until 1975, when they responded to a request for artists who would like to draw a 'Lord of the Rings' calendar for Ballantine Books. They got the job and did three calendars for Ballantine, and they wrote and illustrated their own fantasy epic 'Urshurak'.

The reputation of the Hildebrandt brothers grew further when they created the original 'Star Wars' movie poster in 1977. Greg and Tim split up in the 1980s, each pursuing independent careers as artists. They merged again in 1992 and continued doing commercial art and paintings of fantasy and comic book heroes, such as 'Harry Potter' and 'Spider-Man'.
