Der Trinker by Jakob Hinrichs
Der Trinker

Jakob Hinrichs is a Berlin-based graphic artist and graphic novelist. As a child, he wanted to become a natural scientist, but a later interest in pop culture and design eventually drew him to an artistic profession. He studied at the Universität der Künste in Berlin and at the Universidad del País Basco in Bilbao, Spain. His graphic influences are Tomi Ungerer, John Heartfield, Marie Marcks, Niki de Saint Phalle, Otto Dix, Georg Grosz and other artists from the German New Objectivity art movement. Hinrichs has been mainly active as a freelance illustrator since 2007. Among his clients are international magazines like The New York Times, The New York Times Book Review, The Guardian, The Washington Post, The Boston Globe Magazine, Bloomberg's Business Week, The Wall Street Journal, Reader's Digest, L’Express, Neue Zürcher Zeitung, DAS Magazin vom Tagesanzeiger, Neon, Süddeutsche Publishing and many more.

As a graphic novelist, he has mostly worked on adaptations of novels by classic writers and poets. His imaginative adaptation of the classic 'Traumnovelle' ('Dream Story') by the Austrian writer Arthur Schnitzler (1862-1931) was published by Büchergilde Gutenberg in 2012. It was also published in Spanish (2013) and French (2014). He captured the poems of Soviet poet Wladimir Majakowski in graphic retellings with translations by Boris Preckwitz in the book 'Der Fliegende Proletarier' at Verlagshaus J.Frank. In 2015, Metrolit published his graphic novel adaptation of 'Der Trinker' (1944), an autobiographical story by German writer Hans Fallada (1893-1947), which he wrote in a criminal asylum after a failed attempt to murder his wife.

Hinrichs has also taught and given workshops at the University of the West of England in Bristol (UK), the University of Arts Berlin (Germany) and the Hochschule Mainz (Germany).
