Fokker by Arnold van der Hoeven
'Fokker - Gefluister Aan De Horizon'.

Arnold van der Hoeven was a Dutch commercial illustrator, working mainly on visualizations and storyboards for corporations and events. His short excursion into comics included comic pages for the sci-fi magazine Essef in 1979, and the artwork for a comics biography of Dutch aircraft manufacturer Anthony Fokker, 'Fokker - Gefluister Aan De Horizon' (Oberon, 1982).

Life
Arnold van der Hoeven was born in 1953 in Wolvega, a town in the Dutch province of Frisia. Between 1977 and 1982, he attended the Utrecht School of Applied Arts, and he later settled in the centrally situated town of Scherpenzeel. He died in 2023, at the age of 70.

Essef
While still a student, Arnold van der Hoeven contributed comic art to the sci-fi magazine Essef, appearing alongside such comic book giants as Piet Wijn, Don Lawrence and Bert Bus. In issues #5 through #7, Van der Hoeven provided the artwork for 'De Ouden' (1978-1979), a serial about a space explorer written by magazine editor Raymond Donkersloot. Due to lack of reader support, the feature was dropped after three installments.

Fokker biography
In 1982, Van der Hoeven returned to the medium of comics, when he drew a graphic biography of Anthony Fokker, the Dutch aviation pioneer and aircraft designer. Written by automotive journalist Derk Evers, the comic book 'Fokker - Gefluister Aan De Horizon' (Oberon, 1982) provided an accurate account of Fokker's life and career, making use of comic pages with both text captions and speech balloons.

Among his clients were the University of Wageningen (the "Farm of the Future"), Volkswagen (introduction shows for new models), Douwe Egberts (visualizations for new coffee machines) and Homebase (new ideas and sketches for routing).
