El Hortelano is an all-round artist, involved in painting, illustrating, video and comic art. In the early 1970s, he collaborated with artist Ceesepe on several underground publications. In 1978, his artistic comic book 'Europa Requiem?!' appeared. His work was published in a number of magazines and newspapers, such as Manhattan Catalogue, Star, Ajoblanco, European Illustration, Der Spiegel, The Herald Tribune and Newsweek.

On 3 September 1993, El Hortelano held an exhibition of his comic work in Galerie Lambiek. Later in life, he occupied himself mostly with painting. He died in 2016.
