Tony Hutchings was a mid-20th century British children's book illustrator and comic artist. He should not be confused with late-20th century British comic artist Anthony Hutchings.
Life and career
Tony Hutchings was born as the son of a painter and a mother who was also artistically gifted. His two brothers, Gordon Hutchings and Roger Hutchings would later become illustrators and comic artists in their own right, mostly for the preschool nursery comics of the Amalgamated Press and IPC. Tony Hutchings was only in his late teens when he published his first comics 'Buster the Little Cowboy' (1959) and 'Dicky and Hoppy' (1960) in IPC's Harold Hare's Own Paper (1959-1961). At the A.P., he later took over drawing 'Sooty', 'Num Num and his Funny Family' and 'Pinkie Puff' for Playhour, comics which were previously drawn by his brother Gordon.
In 1963, the Hutchings brothers established their own graphic studio in Soho, where they worked collectively on their comics, children's book illustrations and animation projects. Like the other two Hutchings brothers, his later life and career are shrouded in mystery.
