Éric Joris is a comic book, visual artist and stage artist from Antwerp, Belgium. He has studied film, fine arts, economics, German and French language and industrial design in Antwerp, Paris, Cambridge and Tokyo. Joris is the artist of the comic series 'Chelsy', which was written by Jean Dufaux and published in two books by Glénat in 1990 and 1992. In 1993 he won the Flemish comics prize the Bronzen Adhemar and paid a tribute to Marc Sleen in the book 'Marc Sleen. Een uitgave van de Bronzen Adhemar Stichting' (1993). His comic 'Les Cuisiniers Dangereux' (1995) was created in cooperation with Belgian novelists Herman Brusselmans and Tom Lanoye, as well as film directors Dominique Deruddere, Eric de Kuyper and Josse De Pauw. They wrote some short stories around the vague concept "dangerous kitchen cooks", which references a famous painting by James Ensor. Joris adapted the authors' scripts into a short comic strip, published as supplement in the magazine Knack.
Joris has been experimenting with digital media and internet since an early stage, and has participated in online projects like Kaufhaus Inferno, for which he collaborates with Paul Mennes. Since 2000, he has focused on stage art and the innovative use of multimedia. He founded the collective CREW, that operates on the dividing line between science and art. Eric Joris won the Belgian comics prize the Bronzen Adhemar in 1993.
