On Boucle Les Malles (Dimanche Illustré, 31 July 1938)
Maurice Julhès was a productive humorous illustrator for the press, also known as Maurice-William Julhès, to sound more American. Initially in a style close to Gus Bofa, Julhès made among others front page comic stories for Le Dimanche Illustré. He has illustrated the works of writers like Honoré de Balzac, Charles Baudelaire, Arthur Rimbaud, Boris Vian, Paul Verlaine, Marcel Grancher and Pierre Louÿs.
He was born in 1896 in Sannois, at the Seine-et-Oise (nowadays Val-d'Oise). During World War II, Julhès worked for several magazines that were under German supervision in the north of France. After the Liberation, he was suspended from his activities for two years. In 1947 Julhès was present on the pages of Pierrot with the gag strip 'Monsieur Lezognard'. He also took on illustrating children's books. He owned an inn in the valley of Sausseron, where his befriended artists found lodging. He headed for Paris from time to time to bring his work. Julhès passed away in 1986 in Boulogne-Billancourt.
