Kim Yong-hwan was one of the best Korean comic artists of the 1940s and 1950s. He made his debut in Japan under the name Gita Koji, but returned to Korea after the Liberation. He started out working for the Seoul Times, a magazine in the English language, founded in 1945. He created the 'Kojubu Samgukji' character, which became the first popular Korean comic character. He founded Manhwa Haengjin tabloid in 1948: the first magazine entirely devoted to comics in Korea. During the Korean war, Kim Yong-hwan produced 'The Soldier Todori', in which he described the courage of the South Korean soldiers.
