Enrique A. Lacoste, known as simply Lacoste, is a Cuban graphic artist, caricaturist, cartoonist and illustrator. His best-known creation is 'Wankarani', a young comic hero who protects Cuba's natural resources.
Early life and career
Enrique Arturo Lacoste Prince was born in 1952 in Havana. In this city, he studied Mechanical Engineering at the Military Technical Institute (Instituto Técnico Militar), with a specialization in transport. After graduating in 1983, he worked as an engineer until the 1990s, when he turned to cartooning. In 1997, he began his collaboration with Revista Bohemia, Cuba's oldest general interest magazine, which offers commentary on a wide range of subjects, including politics, history and fashion.

Wankarani
By 2000, Lacoste was also working for Palante, one of the country's oldest humor magazines. His main creation for the magazine was 'Wankarani', a monthly comic strip about an heroic South American boy who protects his country's natural resources from looters, hunters and other enemies of nature, with the help of the Native People and jungle animals. Editorial Pablo de la Torriente has published several books with 'Wankarani' since 2009.

Other cartoons and comics
Lacoste makes both humorous and political cartoons, as well as caricatures of cultural figures from around the world, which have also been picked up by foreign media. Lacoste additionally created the gag strip 'David y Lucas', and the biographical comic book 'Kid Chocolate, La Historia de un Campéon', about Cuban boxing legend Eligio Sardiñas Montalvo (1910-1988).

Recognition
Throughout his career, Lacoste has often been nominated for and won various awards at national and international graphic humor contests. In 1997, he received an award at the International Golden Mouflon Cartoon Festival. At the International WebCartoon Festival, he received First Prize in the category 'Terror and Terrorism' (2005). His work has also been the subject of a few exhibitions.
