Back in his civilian life, MacIntosh worked as an editorial cartoonist for the Journal Herald from Dayton, Ohio, until 1975 and for the Minneapolis Star from 1975 to 1992. In 1986, MacIntosh and Steve Sack created the cartoon activity panel 'Professor Doodles'. MacIntosch dropped his editorial activities in 1992 to focus on 'Doodles' and to take over the art duties on Greg Howard's strip about working mother 'Sally Forth' for King Features. Howard made the strip with script by Howard until 1999, who was then succeeded by Francesco Marciulliano and Steve Alaniz. He left the strip to Jim Keefe in 2013. He had left 'Doodles' in late 2012, and was succeeded by Chris Foote.

MacIntosch has additionally published two books of drawings of historic buildings in Dayton and Minneapolis. He also works with bronzesculpture and watercolor paintings.
