Louis Maîtrejean, born in Bègles in 1882, debuted as an illustrator in American Illustré in 1907. He subsequently contributed to Touche à Tout (1908), Ma Récréation (1910-22), La Semaine de Suzette, L'Almanach Vermot (1911-20), Le Petit Monde (1919) and Le Pêle-Mêle (1924). He was the main illustrator for the magazine Lisette, "Journal des Petites Filles" ("Newspaper for Young Girls"), which appeared weekly from 1920 until at least 1927. For this magazine, he drew among others the comic series 'Linette et son Poilu' with a script by H. J. Babin.
This series was also collected in albums by Éditions du Petit Echo de la Monde. In 1931, he participated in the book 'Les Bêtes s'Amusent' at Mame, and then created 'Leïla Fille de Corsaire' at the Belgian publisher Chagor. In 1941, he was present in Pierrot with 'Le Lotha de Villamour', a police adventure series set in the Dutch Indies (nowadays Indonesia), and later on 'Un Chevalier en Herbe' (script by E. Grospélier).
