O.J. (Otto or Otje) Milo was a Dutch film critic and self-taught cartoonist with the Hague newspaper Het Binnenhof. His style resembles the general illustration techniques of the artists of his time, but takes a more personal tone. After his education, he initially became a servant with the Ministry of Economic Affairs, but was forced to go into hiding during the final war years.
Milo was known for his annual New Year's drawings. Translation: "Would George Orwell be proven right in 1984, after all?".
Milo picked up illustrating while in hiding, and continued this line of work after the war. He was employed by the sports section of Het Binnenhof in 1948. He was however soon transferred to the paper's film section, since this subject suited him better.
In addition to his work as a critic, Milo continued to make cartoons and comic strips. He commented on the topics of the day in a daily slapstick cartoon, that drew inspiration from his film heroes Charlie Chaplin and Laurel & Hardy. Milo was also one of the founders of the Dutch Laurel & Hardy society. As a cartoonist he is however best-known through his drawings for the famous Blueband Sports Boek from 1954.
