Jean Mariette, better known under his pseudonyms Mittéï and Hao, studied at the École Supérieure des Arts Saint-Luc and at the Academy of Fine Arts in Liège for eight years. He began a career in commercial art afterwards. His first comic, 'La Course au Timbre' appeared unfinished in the short-lived Journal de Paddy in 1955. After making some vertical strips for the dailies Le Soir and De Standaard, he joined Studio Greg.

Mittéï made the illustrations for the Tintin-Auto section and created 'L'Indésirable Désiré' in 1960. Three years later, he took over the Franquin creation 'Modeste et Pompon' from Dino Attanasio and continued it until 1975. At the same time, he drew 'Les 3 A' in cooperation with Tibet and with scripts by André-Paul Duchâteau from 1962. He transferred to magazine Spirou in 1976, where he created 'Bonaventure', a little boy who causes misfortune when he takes of his glasses, and made his comic adaptations of Alphonse Daudet's 'Lettres de Mon Moulin' stories.

In 1980 he was one of many Belgian comic artists to make a graphic contribution to the book 'Il Était Une Fois... Les Belges'/'Er Waren Eens Belgen' (1980), a collection of columns and one-page comics, published at the occasion of the 150th anniversary of Belgium. In 1990 he paid graphic tribute to François Walthéry in the collective homage book 'Natacha. Special 20 Ans' (Marsu Productions, 1990), which celebrated the 20th anniversary of Walthéry's series 'Natacha'.

For his scenario work, he mostly used the pseudonym Hao. In later years, he devoted almost all of his time to waterpainting. He returned to comics in 1994 by taking over 'P'tit Bout de Chique' from Francois Walthéry. Jean Mariette died on 16 April 2001.
