José Luis Moro Escalona was one of the leading animators in Spain. Born in Madrid, he began his career in the 1940s by working for comic books and magazines like Flechas y Pelayos, Maravillas, Chicos and Mis Chicas, for which he created comics like 'Hazañas del ratoncito Lepi', 'Roechapas', 'El Abuelo Jonás' and 'Tip y Top'.
He was a pioneer in commercial animation with his Estudios Moro, that he founded with his brother Santiago in 1955. Moro's best-known creation was 'La Familia Telerín', a series of short cartoons that announced the end of the children's programming on Spanish television. The characters also starred in the 1966 feature film 'El Mago de los Sueños', and appeared on merchandise and in a comic feature for Din Dan in cooperation with Blas Sanchis. The brothers gained much approval of their work, and were praised on film festivals in Cannes and Venice. Among their other creations were the animated film 'Katy' in 1983, and the TV shows 'Cantinflas Show' (1972-1982) and 'Marcelino, pan y vino'.
During the final years of his life, Moro suffered from Alzheimer's disease. He passed away in January 2015, at the age of 88.
