After his artistic studies, Helmut Murek presented his artwork to editor-in-chief Peter Wiechmann of the Kauka Verlag. He began to work for Kauka in 1969, starting with several 'Pauli' stories. He became the chief artist in 1972, and illustrated stories with 'Fix und Foxi', 'Pauli', 'Tom und Biber' and 'Die Sieben Schnuckel'. He left the company in 1993. He has also drawn for Yps magazine under the pseudonym Hoppe. In later years, Murek drew the comic 'Sheketa'. Since 2005, upon the relaunch of Fix und Foxi magazine, Murek returned to drawing Kauka comics and, from 2006 on, becoming chief artist.
