Mike Okamoto was born in Detroit, Michigan, and attended the Parsons School of Design in New York City between 1971 and 1975. He began his career doing spot illustrations and commercial art for magazines. His first comic book work was for Mike Barr's 'The Maze Agency' and 'Hero Allience' for Innovation Comics in 1990. For the same company he later painted covers for titles like 'Lost in Space'.

He is best known for his work on the award-winning graphic novel 'Atomic Age', which he made with writer Frank Lovece for Marvel's Epic imprint in 1990. Other comic art by Okomoto includes covers for the Chaos Comics miniseries 'Suspira: The Great Working' and a painted comic adaptation of Piers Anthony's 'Incarnations of Immortality: On a Pale Horse' for Innovation.
