Jeff Barter (Bang-Up Comics #1, 1941)

John J. Olson Sr. began as an assistant to Ed Moore. He worked worked on some of the early comic books, drawing the 'Jeff Barter' feature for Bang-Up Comics by Progressive Publishers in 1941-42. He was stationed in Europe during World War II and served as a medic in the 3rd Army under George Patton. Upon his return in the US, he was hired by the Chicago Tribune-New York News Syndicate.

He created the Sunday strip 'John West' for this syndicate from April 1946 to November 1949. Olson then became Dale Messick's longtime assistant on the 'Brenda Starr, Reporter' comic, from 1950 until 1979. Olson did practically all of the artwork, but Messick drew Brenda herself.
