After his studies at the artistic grammar school, Matteo Piana attended the Scuola d'Arte Applicata all'Industria in Milan. He got his degree in 1997. He began his career drawing for Corriere della Serra and at the Pastori studios. He joined Bonelli in 1999, where he illustrated the series 'Napoleone'. He teamed up with writers Giovanni Gualdoni and Gabriele Clima, with whom he started the series 'Amradel' in 2001. In 2003, they launched 'L'Anneau des 7 Mondes' ('L'Anello dei Settemondi') at the French publisher Les Humanoïdes Associés.
