comic art by Fernando Relvas

Fernando Relvas is probably the artist most responsible for shaping the present-day Portuguese comic scene, and is an inspiration to many comic artists. Relvas made his debut around the time of the Revolution (April 25, 1974). His work was not published in Visão, like the work of most Portuguese artists at this time, but in several fanzines, which permitted him to experiment more. His essential characteristics were his keen observations and imaginative sense of humor.

In 1976, he created a comic in Gazeta da Semana about a workman in the industry of Lisbon, making satirical comments on the Revolution. Relvas gained most success with his series 'Espião Acácio' which he created for the Portuguese Tintin. He also started a series of historical comics for Tintin that became the most significant and innovative part of his oeuvre. Fernando Relvas continued this sort of historical comic in the weekly magazine Se7e. In more recent years, he has been working on web comics, while in search for a publisher.
