Tibitin by Jean-Michel Renault

Jean-Michel Renault is a French illustrator and caricaturist. Born in Calais, he began a collaboration with Pilote magazine at the age of 19 in 1973. He produced several short stories and many caricatures under only his first name until 1979. He later also worked as a caricaturist for the French TV station TF1, and for the magazines Tennis Magazine, Sunday Time magazine, Stratégie, Midi Libre and Nouveau Sud.

Renault lived in the French Antilles from 1979 until 1983. He created a weekly comic page called 'Les Aventures de Tibitin le petit Antillais' for Télé 7 Jours, a magazine published in Guadeloupe and Martinique. Three book collections were published; the first by Éditions du Pélican in 1981, the second and third by Les Éditions Pat à Pan in 2007 and 2009.

Back in France, Renault settled in Montpellier, where he turned to the publishing profession, first with Les Créations du Pélican (focusing on touristic guides about the isles) and then with Éditions Pat à Pan (focusing on comics, cartoon and caricature books). He has continued to make illustrations for magazines (Le Nouveau Sud, Midi Libre, L'Hebdi, L’Agglorieuse, Barricade), books, posters, the press and corporations (Visas, Quercy), for which he often used the signature Tibitin. Renault made a comic about the life of Salvador Dali with Robert Descharnes for BD Éditeurs in 1986.
