'La Sauvage Enchanteresse'.
Frank William Reusswig was born in 1902 in Somerville, New Jersey into a family of German ancestry. He studied at Amherst College and made his first illustration assignments for magazines like like Colliers, Cosmopolitan, Redbook, Saturday Evening Post and Country Gentleman. In 1944, he illustrated the first six episodes of 'Tarawa', the eyewitness account by US war correspondent Robert Sherrod of one of the toughest battles of the US Marines in the Pacific. It was part of the syndicate's "Book-of-the-Month" feature (1942-1947), in which a book was serialized in newspapers in comic strip format. The rest of 'Tarawa' was drawn by John W. Mayo.
After serving in World War II, Reusswig sold freelance illustrations to men's adventure magazines like True, Argosy, Sports Afield and Outdoor Life. He also made comic adaptations of novels for the newspaper section by King Features and the Book-of-the-Month Club (a.o. 'Paris Underground'). Reusswig married author and illustrator Martha Sawyers, with whom he traveled around the world and produced several books about the Far East. He died in 1978.
