'Maître Goupil' (Lutin #9, 11 January 1945).

V. Roléo was a Belgian comic artist, active the post-World War II period. After appearing with two serials in Lutin magazine (1945-1946), he created the historical detective strip 'Mac-Nib' (1948-1951) for La Libre Belgique.

Lutin
Nothing is known about the identity of the cartoonist behind the signature V. Roléo. Since he appeared in a magazine largely filled with material by Charles Gilbert and his students, it is possible that Roléo was also part of the "At-Gil" or "Imagil" team. In 1944-1945, he contributed text comic serials to Lutin, a short-lived weekly "magazine for boys and girls", published in Brussels by J. Renault. These included the Arabian Nights-flavored 'La Punition d'Allah' (issues #6 through #15) and the medieval funny animal comic 'Maître Goupil' (issues #7 through #13). Besides Roléo and Charles Gilbert, other comic artists in Lutin were Madeleine Gérard, J. Frank and a couple of unidentified creators.

Mac-Nib
Between 19 May 1948 and 1951, an artist with the name Roléo also appeared in the newspaper La Libre Belgique with the comic strip 'Les Aventures de Mac Nib, Détective'. Appearing shortly after World War II, the comic strip still strongly reflected anti-German sentiments, as it starred a 19th-century British detective who constantly has to save the world from German/Prussian villains. Other recurring characters are Professor Humbug and the detective's co-workers Slim Groogy and Jimmy. Several stories were serialized, such as 'Le 3e Hémisphère', 'Le Kouttar d'Argent', 'Le Fantôme des Brumes', 'Les Têtes d'Or', 'La Guerre du Froid' and 'Mac-Nib contre Clickott'. For most of the time, the 'Mac-Nib' comic shared the page with Marten Toonder's 'Panda'.
